I used to keep quick links to Facebook, Twitter and Analytics in Mozilla, just above where the individual tabs were. Every 10 seconds or so, as if to punctuate thought, I’d take a guilty trip to each of these sites, getting sidetracked from doing actual work, i.e. the kind that makes actual money and makes an actual difference. *cough*

My guily pleasures: Facebook, Twitter and Youtube

I removed these quick links from Mozilla and found that I checked those time-sucking sites far lessĀ  frequently than previously (albeit still far more frequently than most normal, non-internet people). Having to type the full web address in every time you want to check a site raises the amount of energy required just enough for your laziness to kick in, saving your sorry ass from wasting your time in a weirdly ironic and circular way. Thanks to a post on the Positivity Blog for this excellent idea.

  • If we all spent as much time workng as we did going in to those services we would be a lot better off! The other one that needs to be banned are stats! I spend my life checkin g those out and they never change at all!
  • Stats are the worst man! Not only do they eat up time but they also bring you on a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows, depending on how your site is doing.
